Musculoskeletal Community Appointment Day
The Community appointment days are an opportunity for patients who have been referred to Community MSK services in Central Manchester for assessment or rehabilitation advice to receive health promotion, community, and voluntary sector support all at one appointment.
You will be invited to attend a local community centre or a leisure centre for a physiotherapy session and access to a whole host of additional services, advice and education to help you manage your condition, health and wellbeing. You can see as many or as few services as you like.
Our team of physiotherapists, advanced practitioners and other support staff, will provide assessment and support to address what matters most to you and community partners will be on hand to offer advice on a range of issues, health, housing, wellbeing and staying fit and well.
Please note: The events are ONLY for people who have been referred to Manchester University Trust Community MSK physiotherapy service.
- Assessment and health conversations with physiotherapists and advanced clinical practitioners
- Access to advice and dedicated rehabilitation area to receive programme specific to your condition
- Information stalls from NHS and community groups
- Support with long term conditions.
- This shouldn’t be like other appointment as you won’t just see one clinician in a small clinic room. Here you will be able to see the specialists you need in a welcoming, accessible venue, and spend as much time as you need with them.
- Most patients will then not need to see us again after the CAD, but there will be the option to do this if you wish. There will be other patients seen at the same time as you, but we have designed the event to ensure your privacy.
- There will be other services and organisations you should be able to speak to at the CAD, which will include NHS free health checks, physical activity services, weight management, employment support, citizenship advice service, and housing support.
- We will hold these events in locations which are easily accessible via public transport and easy parking. Appointment letters will have details of public transport and car parking.
- We would like to take some photographs at the events. If you do not wish to be in any photographs, please let us know when you arrive.
To make the day run more smoothly for everyone:
- Allow time for your travel. Aim to arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment time to save last minute panic.
- Please let us know if you cannot attend. This helps us offer your slot to someone else. If you do not attend or contact us, we will discharge you from the service.
- If you have any additional need including interpreters, please discuss this in advance as that may help us to make arrangement on a day.
If you have any of the following symptoms, we recommend that you do not attend the event and seek advice from your GP or 111;
- any weight loss that you cannot explain through diet or lifestyle change
- Severe night pain
- New onset of night sweats
- Constant severe pain, not eased by movement
- Recent trauma such as a fall from height or road traffic accident (in the last six weeks)
- Pins and needles/numbness/weakness in both arms or legs
- Altered sensation in the genital area
- New changes to or loss of bladder control or difficulty emptying your bladder
- New changes to loss of bowel control
- Recent unsteadiness on your feet

The patients will be invited to attend such events from the Community MSK Physiotherapy waiting list and will be given an appointment time to come along.
The events are held in a local community centre or local leisure centre. The hall will be divided into few large areas and the each area will have dedicated clinicians available. Once you have had your first clinical conversation you will be advised to visit the area(s) that we will feel will support you and your condition. Our stewards will help guide you through the space. You will be given your own document (called a patient passport) to keep and to make your own notes.
You will have as long as you need, there is no time limit on the appointments. Each person’s appointment will be different.
Our events are all held on the ground floor level. Close to the main entrance and in proximity of public transport and car parking space. Our stewards and signage will help you find your way.
There may be many people in the space. If you struggle with crowds or noise sensitivity you may prefer an alternative appointment. Please call us to discuss this.
Disabled toilets are available on site.
Due to space restrictions, we ask that you attend on your own, unless you need support from a carer.
