Why do we need Winning Hearts and Minds in Manchester?
Manchester has some of the most vibrant and diverse communities in the UK. We are famous for football, music and industry, but we are also famous for having some pretty poor health.
There are many different things that influence our health and wellbeing such as:
Age, sex and hereditary factors - for example some people inherit conditions from their parent’s DNA
Individual lifestyle - what we choose to eat and drink and the amount of exercise we do impacts on our health
Social and community networks - the people that we know influence us
Living and working conditions - not every town, city or country has equal access to free healthcare, well-paid jobs, higher education or good transport
General socioeconomic, cultural and environmental conditions - factors such as politics, the economy and global issues affect everyone.
The Winning Hearts and Minds programme will work in partnership with the local community and other organisations to offer support and advice that works best for each community. People are at the heart of what we do.
Aims for Manchester’s communities:
To improve the conditions that create health in the most socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods;
To reduce levels of physical inactivity (i.e. reduce the number of adults undertaking less than 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week);
To reduce the number of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular events;
To improve the physical health of people with Severe and Enduring Mental Illness (SMI);
To strengthen connections, relationships and collective action for healthy lifestyles.
