Vulnerable Baby Prevent & Protect Service

Vulnerable Baby Prevent & Protect Service

The service facilitates a safeguarding approach for families identified of being at risk of unexplained death of infants.

The VBS was set up in 2004 to tackle infant mortality in Manchester, in particular sudden unexplained death of infants (SUDI).

Families identified as being at risk of unexplained death of infants.

We facilitate targeted, bespoke packages of care for babies at risk (identified in referral criteria). This includes multiagency Case Planning in partnership with the family that aims to reduce the identified risk factors and support parent(s).

We also ensure safe sleeping messages are embedded in practice by providing Public Health education and training for staff and multiagency partners in Manchester.

The team play a public health role in preventative practices — leading on safe sleeping policies across the city and strategically informing practice to improve outcomes for infants. VBS now works with other agencies to implement actions set out in the Infant Mortality Strategy for Manchester.

Contact the service for any queries or information regarding referral criteria. Service for pregnant women or for families with a baby under 1-year-old.
